Games used to be simple. Mario’s whole premise is that the bad guy kidnaps the princess, and Mario is on a mission to save her. The games were often filled with difficult puzzles that challenged one’s reasoning skills and hand-eye coordination. Now, games are more story-driven. They still challenge your hand-eye coordination and reasoning skills but without the simplicity.
When I was a kid, I got an original Nintendo Gameboy for Christmas. My older brother and I had two games. The pack-in title, Tetris, and Super Mario Land. I later got Zelda: Link’s Awakening. I still remember playing Tetris with my brother, taking turns. The graphics were simple, and the games were simple, but retro games were still fun and often more challenging than modern games. There’s something about those games that just draws people in. That’s why Nintendo, with their huge library, brought some of them to the Switch with the Nintendo Online service. It just shows that even thirty years later, some games are still as popular as they were the first time they were played.
Have you played any retro games? What’s your favorite game from yesteryear?
