I’ve found that no matter how skilled a writer you are, there will always be those who try to bring you down. Some of these people are just passing by, so it’s easy to ignore them since everyone has their own opinions. But sometimes, those naysayers are family or friends. Their comments really sting because you rely on them to support you, and when they doubt you, it can make you feel like an impostor. I learned early on that while I care about their opinions, I can’t let their negativity affect my work. I need to have confidence in my abilities and my work. Some of my close friends once said I was making up friends and contacts, and even jobs. At first, it was a real blow, but then I found a saying that really resonated with me: “Writers’ block: when your imaginary friends stop talking to you.” I even got shirts and mugs with that saying on them. I know it’s not much comfort to just dismiss the opinions of those closest to you, but in this industry, that’s what you have to do while surrounding yourself with supportive and cooperative people. No one truly understands the hard work of being a writer except those who’ve poured their hearts and souls into putting words on a page and striving for perfection. If writing brings you joy, chase your dreams! Just remember that writers are often starving artists. You shouldn’t get into this field if you only want to make millions of dollars. You should get into it to share your talent, entertain, and inform others. If you do that, you’re already a success. Let the naysayers, even those you respect and love, have their opinions. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be a writer. If you put in the effort and even if your work touches just one person, you’re a successful writer.
