Being a writer is a double-edged sword. On one hand, I get to wake up and dive into something I adore—creating stories that bring joy to others. On the other hand, I face the challenge of a world that might not fully appreciate my work, and I have to muster the willpower to resist the temptation to procrastinate. There are days when I know I won’t get much writing done because other tasks demand my attention, but then there are days when I just don’t feel like sitting down and writing. It’s all part of the journey. Every writer experiences these days. A successful writer is one who perseveres and gets words on the page. With my ADHD brain, it takes discipline to be creative. I start my day early, getting up to my alarm, changing clothes, making coffee, feeding the dogs, taking out the trash, and do the dishes. By then, the first pot of coffee is ready. I share it with my father and a neighbor, chatting about current events, our lives, or just having a good laugh for about three hours. Then, it’s time to get to work—writing. I work in short bursts, taking breaks to refill my water bottle, play with my dog, or play a game on the Switch 2, but I usually aim to reach 1,000 to 1,500 words before calling it a day. That routine is what makes my success possible. Days when I don’t stick to it are days when I struggle to write at all. I can’t avoid distractions all the time. Sometimes, I get lost in a rabbit hole, and before I know it, it’s almost time to wrap up the day. It’s hard to stay focused on the routine, especially with ADHD, but without it, I wouldn’t be able to work in a creative field where I’m my own boss. It takes real commitment and discipline to overcome my ADHD brain’s desire to stay in bed all day with a good movie or book, play games, or get distracted in countless other ways. If I’m being completely honest, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Being a writer and creating content for my readers is my passion, and I find joy and challenge in that.

Do you have a routine that you stick to, and if so, what does it look like?
