As a writer, I’ve decided to dive into some cool new tech to make my writing even better. ChatGPT is definitely a game-changer!
Characters
When I’m imagining a character or place, I often get glimpses of what they will look like when they’re all done. I might picture a scar on the left eye, a long, crooked nose, or piercing, dark eyes. Sometimes, I can even see the face’s shape as a diamond pattern. I might also notice the skin’s shading or the character’s race. Maybe it’s an unusual hair color that just jumps out at me. So, I put all that together into a prompt for ChatGPT, like this: “create and realistic image of an olive skinned man, with a small scar over his left eye. He has a crooked noise and dark piercing eyes. His head is diamond shaped. He has dark black hair with dyed blue highlights.”
Maybe I want him to look younger so I state: “make him age 18.”
I’m always tweaking my description, trying to nail down the character that perfectly captures my vision.
Locations
Locations are set up in a way that’s quite similar to characters, but I’ll mention where they’re situated nearby, like this: “create a realistic image of a abandoned warehouse in New Orlando’s where mother nature has started to reclaim the building and people have tagged the walls. most of the windows are broken out and the corner of the building is starting to crumble.”
Cover Art Concepts
I also like to use ChatGPT to brainstorm cover art ideas for my stories. I don’t think it’s a perfect substitute for a cover designer, but it’s a helpful starting point to give them a glimpse of what I’m imagining.
Discussion
I don’t share these images ChatGPT creates with many people, but they’re portraits of places or people I can always look back on when I describe them. This helps me keep my descriptions consistent and avoid repeating myself. ChatGPT is really a tool to help me bring my mental images of an image or parts of an image to life completely.
