As a teenager, I was a Boy Scout, and as the motto says, be prepared. I learned to carry a Swiss Army Knife. I have held a Swiss Army Knife ever since then. As a network engineer, I took a Victorinox Cybertool Swiss Army Knife because it had everything I needed in my day-to-day operations. My Dad gave me my first Swiss Army Knife when I was twelve as a gift for joining the Boy Scouts Of America.

Today, I carry the Victorinox Swiss Army Spartan Pocket Knife. It’s got all the tools that I need for my everyday carry. I use it almost daily and feel naked without it in my pocket. It has two blades. One I use for opening packages, and the other, a larger blade, I use to cut anything else that comes my way. I matched that with the bottle opener for a cold brew at the end of a writing session or the corkscrew for a glass of wine, and I’m set for my R and R time. Honestly, these tools get more use as screwdrivers than they do as bottle openers, but they still get tons of use. I have added a mini glasses screwdriver accessory on the corkscrew, also made by Victorinox.

Several times, I’m asked to be the MacGyver of the group since everyone knows that I carry my trusty Swiss Army Knife as he did in the TV show. I’m always ready to be of service when the situation calls.

I won’t say that carrying a Swiss Army Knife hasn’t ever gotten me in trouble. On the contrary, I remember a story from the first grade. My Dad was helping me pick out an item for show and tell. Being the eerily 90s and him being an old farmer, we didn’t see any problem with me bringing a Swiss Army Knife into an elementary school for show and tell. The teacher had her reservations about the idea, and the principal quickly had my parents in her office for a meeting before my knife was returned with a promise from me never to bring it back to school.

My Victorinox Swiss Army Spartan Pocket Knife is a critical part of my everyday life, and I don’t know what I would do without it in my pocket. It is one of my favorite things. Do you carry a knife in your everyday carry?
