There are lots of ways that I come to ideas for stories. One of the most frequent is dreams. I come up with a lot of story elements while I dream. I often come across a bit of writer’s block, and I start with meditation on the story and its progress, but more times than not, the answer to what happens next in the story to get over the block comes to me in my sleep that night.
I also have story ideas that come to me that I might use in the current story or in future stories. I immediately open a new note and dictate the story elements that came to me in a dream so that they are as fresh as possible. I might use them in the story, or they might just be backstory that the reader never sees.
