Nintendo Switch, like all Nintendo products, isn’t exactly a tech powerhouse. They’re often seen as underpowered, and many hardcore gamers feel they’re overpriced for what you get. But I’m not so sure. Nintendo hasn’t always had the most powerful devices, but their games are truly amazing. The Switch 2 is in the same boat. Compared to the rumored Xbox handheld, Sony’s handheld, or even most smartphones, the Switch 2 seems a bit weak in terms of power. Where Nintendo shines is in their games. The library of intellectual properties, like Mario, Pokémon, and Donkey Kong, keeps them a contender in the gaming world. While the new features of the Switch 2 look like refinements of the Switch and a bit of a step back in screen technology compared to the Switch OLED, it’s a nice upgrade with lots of potential. Nintendo has also learned from its game chat experience, which was so cumbersome with the Switch and the smartphone app that most gamers didn’t use it or even know about it. Nintendo has taken a page from Microsoft’s playbook from the Xbox 360 and brought camera support and voice chat to the Switch 2, but in the most Nintendo way. They’ve used their software to make the experience fun and enjoyable, while keeping it secure and safe for younger players.
Let’s get back to the games! Nintendo has a huge collection of cool stuff, and they use it to get gamers excited about their games. Microsoft’s head mentioned that the days of exclusive games are over, as they’re releasing big titles on PlayStation. But Nintendo is sticking with their closed system, and I think they’re right. Sure, it might be fun and cheaper to play the latest Mario game on your PC without a dedicated system, but Nintendo creates not just games, but experiences. You choose Nintendo for entertaining, somewhat relaxed games. They’re all about making fun games while telling a story and keeping it safe for gamers. This might mean that hardcore gamers don’t see them as the biggest players in the market, but that’s a mistake. Nintendo gamers are in for a treat of entertainment without the hassle of dealing with gamers who bully others for their skill or dedication to the game. Most Nintendo gamers are just there to play a match or two in my downtime without letting the game become my life. It’s a balancing act, but one that I play to have fun with my games while being an active member of society.
With all this said, I believe the Switch 2 is going to be another win for Nintendo and the gaming market as a whole. If you haven’t had a chance to play one yet, stop by your local Target and try out the demos. They give you a 20 to 15-minute time limit so you don’t spend all day playing the Switch 2. It’s easy to get lost in time with the Switch 2 and Nintendo’s amazing game catalog. If you do pick one up or own one, join me online. Below is my Nintendo Friend Code, and I’m looking forward to playing games with the community we’re forming.
