Writers can often do their work anywhere, but that’s not entirely accurate. While I can write anywhere, I’m much more productive when I’m at a table with a cup of coffee rather than on a bus. It’s said that Maya Angelou would rent a simple hotel room without any decorations. I’m not that particular. I have four main spots where I write, depending on what I’m working on.
My main spot is a place my friends tease me about. A few years ago, I bought an old, worn Lazy-boy recliner from Facebook Marketplace for $60. The back upholstery is starting to come apart, but the stuffing is still in place. I used a few staples to keep it together and got a recliner cover from Amazon for $10. I painted the handle and often sit with my writing buddy, Zuul, on my lap. I put on my AirPods Max, my iPad Air on my lap, a good writing playlist, and I’m ready to go!
When I need to do more heavy lifting or take a break from the iPad, I move to my custom writing desk. About a dozen years ago, I got a custom writer’s desk made by a husband and wife team on Etsy. It’s a simple desk with two metal legs and a red stained hardwood top. I keep it simple to avoid distractions. I use my Mac mini and a HomePod mini to play some music, and I have a 55-inch curved screen where I can lay out my ideas and easily switch between apps without taking my eyes off the screen.
If it’s early morning, you can find me outside having coffee with my Dad and a neighbor. I often wake up early and take my iPad Air to try and write an article or a few hundred words on my current novel. The chair isn’t the most comfortable, and the lighting is low, but when I’m in the mood, I can get some real progress done quickly. Actually, that’s how this article is being written!
Finally, I find it’s easy to write when I’m at a coffee shop. Sometimes, I’m in a real hurry, and using my AirPods Pro and iPad Air, it is just the perfect solution. I know it might seem like it would be counterproductive to be surrounded by so many distractions, especially with my ADHD, but it somehow works. I’ll admit that it’s usually shorter session than writing at the other locations because it’s just a matter of time before my ADHD takes over and the distractions become too much to ignore. For the hour or so I can manage, I can get the most words on the page and with the fewest edits later.
