As a writer, I’m constantly on the move. Therefore, I have different setups depending on whether I’m home or remote.

I used to use a MacBook Pro all the time, but I found I was too prone to distractions. Currently, I’m using a M1 Mac Mini for my home setup with strict focus modes for writing while I’m working. This works fine for when I’m at home, where I can put on music and already have limited distractions. My AHDH brain can focus on getting words on the page.

When I am out and about, I use my second-generation 11-inch iPad Pro with the Apple Magic Keyboard most of the time with an Apple Magic Mouse. Okay, I know I will get asked with all these accessories; why not just use the MacBook Pro with focus modes? There are ) reasons. First, I get distracted so quickly that I find that in public, using the iPad Pro is a better way to combat distractions. Second, sometimes, I want to undock the iPad and read my writing, for example, while editing. Thirdly, I find it a lot easier to carry the iPad in public situations rather than carrying my old MacBook Pro.

I’m not saying that this is the only way to write while on the move. I consider myself lucky to have choices for device and setup. I also find myself using my iPhone often enough that it deserves an honorable mention in this article. One of the beauties of the Apple ecosystem is that no matter what device I use, all my content is backed up to the cloud and physical media. I use Apple’s handoff feature so much that I think I would be wasting valuable seconds if I didn’t have the feature. Again thanks to my ADHD brain the longer I wait to get things written down the greater the likelihood I’m going to forget the idea.

This is my home and mobile setups. Do you have different setups for you home and remote working setup?
