This month’s My Favorite Things article is all about the RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V brushless cordless rotary tool kit, model number PBLRT01K1. That’s quite a mouthful, so to keep things simple, I’ll just call it the RYOBI Rotary Tool from now on. As part of my RYOBI review, I got the USB Lithium version of the RYOBI Rotary Tool to test out, and then I decided to dive into power carving. That led me to get the top-of-the-line rotary tool from RYOBI.
The RYOBI Rotary Tool is a battery-powered rotary tool that fits into RYOBI’s ONE+ 18v system. If you’re as invested in RYOBI’s ONE+ 18v system as I am, you can power over 300 different tools and accessories with those same batteries.
The tool can reach speeds of up to 25,000 RPMs, which is 5,000 RPMs faster than most rotary tools. This speed is adjustable, so you can set it from 1,000 RPMs all the way up to the maximum with just a turn of a dial or a press on the foot pedal.
The kit I received includes the foot control pedal, which is optional but makes controlling the variable RPMs (speed) super easy. It really makes using the tool a breeze. Some cuts need a faster-moving burr, while others require a slower speed for more detailed work or sanding.
The precision handle is made of aluminum and feels a bit heavy in your hand, but in a good, secure way. I find it feels like a strong, powerful tool that’s well in control. Since it’s made of aluminum, I thought the vibrations would get painful after a while, but on the contrary, it feels comfortable, and the vibrations are somehow kept to a minimum. Compared to the leading compaction from Dremel, which vibrates so much through plastic (which absorbs vibration), I felt it was uncomfortable and sometimes worried that the handle would slip out of my hand.
Swapping bits and burrs is a breeze with the RYOBI QuickChange Collet! Just take out the battery, press a button on the hand piece, and turn the collet to release or tighten the bit or burr. It’s super secure and tight. That’s where I ran into a snag. The collet was so tight and hard to loosen that I had to remove it completely with a wrench to hand loosen the bit. It seemed to be a problem with the RYOBI Rotary Tool when I first got it, but after a couple of burr changes, the collet works perfectly now. I think it’s because RYOBI adds all that oil to the tool to protect it during shipping.
The device comes with a built-in stand that folds out to be a hanger, or I used the integrated screw mounts to mount the RYOBI Rotary Tool to a utility cart. I’m working on building a woodcarving station with built-in dust collection because using any rotary tool for woodcarving creates a mountain of dust. But several readers and viewers of the video of me carving have asked me to describe my setup. That video and article are coming soon.
Lastly, for peace of mind, the RYOBI Rotary Tool comes with RYOBI’s 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, as long as you register the device.
In conclusion, I love my RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V brushless cordless rotary tool kit, model number PBLRT01K1. I think it’s the best rotary tool on the market, and for my money, it beats all the other name brands out there. I’ve been having a blast with the RYOBI Rotary Tool for my power woodcarving. I’ll keep sharing my journey with the tool.
Have you used the RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V brushless cordless rotary tool kit, model number PBLRT01K1, if so, what do you think about the tool?
