Since I began woodcarving, I have decided to use a RYOBI Rotary Tool to power carve basswood. There are several companies out there making the bits—called burrs—for power carving. The gold standard is made by Kutzall. They make wood carving burrs that are expensive but long-lasting, and they cut a ton of material off at once.
I have been asked to review the RYOBI burrs. This is not a sponsored post, and this is strictly my opinion. RYOBI burrs are a fraction of the cost of the other guys, and in my experience, they have held up longer with proper maintenance.
To maintain burrs, it’s recommended that they be brushed off with a wire brush to remove wood particles and then burned with a blowtorch to remove anything stuck between the teeth. Lastly, the wire brush is employed again to remove the soot. I have found that as long as I do this maintenance once a week, I have seven days of heavy carving without issue. The teeth have held up longer, and with a smaller hit to my pocket.
